As the Communications Manager you will develop and lead the branding, communications, marketing, and public relations strategies to communicate the mission and vision of AIDS Services of Austin (ASA), and elevate ASA’s profile throughout the community. As a part of ASA’s Development Department you will be part of a dynamic team that supports the fundraising and communication efforts of the agency in support of the life-affirming programs and services we offer. You will be joining the largest and most storied AIDS Service Organization in Central Texas as we move toward the reality of an HIV-free generation.

A successful Communications Manager must be willing and able to:

  • Work with the CEO, Director of Development, and agency leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate an annual communications plan that builds a cohesive organization-wide brand for all programs and departments of AIDS Services of Austin.
  • Build awareness or support efforts to raise awareness in the community of the programs, services, fundraising campaigns, and events facilitated by ASA.
  • Ensure messaging and brand consistency are woven into all ASA communications, various websites, and activities, and ensure brand fidelity through the establishment of clear marketing and branding guidelines.
  • Develop relationships with staff and clients/patients to capture and tell stories of the direct impact and work of ASA.
  • Develop strategic relationships with key media representatives to promote ASA’s mission, programs, and events, draft press releases and pitch key stories and talking points to local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Develop strategies for using technology for marketing and public relations activities and demonstrate expertise in (1) project management, (2) integration of new technologies and website redesign, and (3) social media strategy and social media management applications.
  • Supervise Multi-Media Specialist and manage content creation, including but not limited to graphic design and copy needs of ASA.
  • Analyze communications strategies to ensure consistent, high-quality messaging.
  • Plan institutional communications, including print publications (annual report, organizational brochure, direct mail pieces, hard-copy newsletters, and other publications and messages) and e-publications (email, social media outlets, website, and other external on-line media).
  • Develop communications of a high-quality, professional nature.
  • Collaborate with program staff in developing communication strategies and support for programmatic initiatives.
  • Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Work independently and within a team.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Development.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED required.
  • Two to three years of demonstrated experience in strategic organizational communications, including successful development and implementation of measurable communication plans required.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing successful marketing plans, including media, print, website, event collateral, social media outreach, and public relations required.
  • Experience in implementation of messaging and marketing strategies, specifically related to both print and web-based messaging required.
  • Experience in analyzing and reporting on social media/marketing metrics required.
  • Strong writing, analytical, and organizational skills required.
  • Strong verbal skills with experience in public speaking, including experience with media interviews required.
  • Experience with various software programs, including Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, as well as web applications such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, advertising, marketing, journalism, English, sociology, or liberal arts preferred.
  • Two years of managerial experience in a communications role preferred.
  • One to two years of demonstrated experience with promoting fundraising events, walks, direct mail, individual donor development, and/or similar fundraising activities preferred.
  • Experience with health-related messaging and marketing preferred.
  • Experience with graphic and publishing applications and donor/constituent software preferred.
  • Experience with online marketing software, Convio, highly preferred.
  • Experience with fundraising/communication software, including Photoshop and Sage Fundraiser’s 50 preferred.
  • Bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with organizations working with HIV or vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse cultures, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities and/or expressions preferred.
