Founded in 1987, the FCAA mission is to mobilize the leadership, ideas, and resources of funders to eradicate the global HIV/AIDS pandemic and to address its social and economic dimensions. FCAA membership is comprised of global funders, including: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, the M.A.C AIDS Fund, Elton John AIDS Foundation (U.S. and U.K.), Comic Relief, Aids Fonds, Levi Strauss Foundation and ViiV Healthcare, among others. This important community was responsible for disbursing $680 million in support for global HIV/AIDS efforts in 2016.

Project and Position Overview:

Funders Concerned About AIDS’ signature report, Philanthropic Support to Address HIV and AIDS, is the most comprehensive study of its kind, capturing data on more than 7,000 grants awarded by 392 funders, in an effort to identify gaps, trends, and opportunities in HIV-related philanthropy. FCAA’s analysis involves collecting grant level data from funders and coding each grant according to our taxonomy. This data supports funders in their efforts to make informed decisions about where resources would have the most impact.

The Research Intern is needed to assist in the data collection and coding phase, and will:

  • Attend an initial in-person training for the project
  • Gather and organize HIV/AIDS-related grants data from philanthropic organizations
  • Analyze and code data according to FCAA’s grant coding taxonomy
  • Compute and summarize the data by category
  • Meet regularly with the Research & Communications Associate to update on progress

The data generated will be used in FCAA’s communications throughout the year and in the resource tracking report, to be released on World AIDS Day 2018 (December). HIV/AIDS-related resource tracking and financial monitoring data has become increasingly important in the current climate of stagnant funding for the AIDS response, where the needs outpace the available resources. FCAA aims to present its resource tracking data in such a way to help align and leverage resources and ensure HIV/AIDS funding is going to the most urgent and needed areas. This position will report directly to FCAA’s Research & Communications Associate.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn in general about the field of HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-related philanthropy, and specifically about key philanthropic organizations and their projects related to HIV/AIDS research, treatment, prevention, advocacy, and other issue areas. In addition, the research associate will gain experience in the systems and processes used to manage a complex data-driven research project.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 1+ years of relevant work experience.
